Beautiful tawny colour with rich golden amber on the edge. Aromatic ripe fruit, spice and aged rancio. Velvety texture, luscious, mouth filling and lingering flavours. Fratelli is Italian for "brothers" and this wine is a testament to the hard work of Pasquale and Angela Fiumara and their seven sons in establishing the family-owned vineyards and winery. David Ellis, Melbourne Observer, 24 December 2007 — SEE CLIPPING THE HERALD (Newcastle) 26/03/08 Uncorked Score 4.5/5 It packs 19.5 per cent alcohol and invites the pouring of a second glass, so it's best to enjoy this clinker fortified at home in your favourite armchair. lt is deep crimson with amber tints and exudes scents of rich fruitcake and hazelnuts. Succulent raisin flavours hold sway on the front of the palate and elements of bramble jelly, cinnamon, cloves and nutty oak chime in on the middle palate. Lingering lush fruit characters, minty tannins and a whisper of flinty acid combine at the finish. It would be great with a King island cheese plate with dried muscatels, quince paste and poppy seed lavosh. Winemaker Robert Fiumara decided it was time to indulge his passion for fortified wine with some of the aged material sitting at his family's Lillypilly Estate at Leeton in the NSW Riverina. This included stock based on a range of varieties including shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and muscat of Alexandria. "Over the years we have released several wines that I would put in the late-bottled vintage-port style, but I've also had a keen interest in creating the basis for a softer, richer, more complex and aromatic, cask- matured blended fortified," Mr Fiumara said. Other motives for the new fortified wine were to mark the family's 35-year involvement in grape growing, the 25th anniversary of its winery and to honour a family member. The result is the Fratelli 7 (or seven brothers) that commemorates Lillypilly founders Pasquale and Angela Fiumara and their seven sons. The inaugural release also carries the tag Domenic Blend, after the eldest son who died in 1987. The Fratelli 7 is indeed a richer style of fortified (in the style we once called port in this country). It has raisin and nutty oak notes, complexity and a lengthy and smooth finish.
